The 1965 finalists' work was exhibited from 22 January to 20 February 1966. Also in the Archibald exhibition that year were prominent artists such as Sam Fullbrook, Clifton Pugh, Judy Cassab, Sali Herman, Robert Dickerson, Joshua Smith, Roland Wakelin and Bob's master Graeme Inson. John Coburn and Sam Fullbrook were in the Sulman.

When he was 25, Bob Finlayson's work was selected for exhibition in both the Archibald Prize competition and the Sulman Prize competition. These prestigious Australian prizes began through bequests and the annual competitions are administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The Archibald Prize, for portraiture, was first awarded in 1921 and the Sulman Prize, for subject or genre painting, in 1936.
